Is your web site worth $287 million dollars?

If not, maybe you need to read this article. 

Don't get the wrong impression. My web site isn't worth that much either at this moment, but I can tell you about one that is.

Over one year ago, Mirabilis was purchased by AOL for over $287 million dollars. Although this company was just a small business with one major software program, it was worth absolute millions to the major corporation of AOL.

ICQ and can be visited at http://www.icq.com. This software enables anyone on the Internet to engage in chats or to personally contact anyone else who is online at the moment and a user of this software.

The most interesting part of the story is that Mirabilis doesn't sell this software. They give it away for Free. It is available to anyone who wants it online. All you have to do is go to their site or a multitude of other sites and download it to your computer.

Although I currently use such techniques as ezine advertising, banner ads, Goto.com advertising, and more, the KEY to the majority of profitable traffic always has been free advertising.

In a moment, I will also reveal to you the most successful free promotion I have ever done. Before we get to that though, let's discuss the best business you could ever be involved with online.

Almost every week someone emails me and asks me, "What is the most profitable business online?" When I first started getting these emails, I had a difficult time answering them because I wasn’t positive of the best overall answer.

I no longer have this problem. The absolute best thing that you can promote online is software. It is the easiest thing for any small business to get involved with and possibly achieve almost overnight success.

Think about it for moment. What does absolutely every computer user need? They need software. What has made Bill Gates the richest man on the planet? He is the software guru. If you own a computer, you buy software from him!

You may not be the software creating type though. Perhaps spending hour after hour staring at the codes on the computer just doesn't appeal to you. Well, you are in good company. It doesn't really appeal to me either.

People are not paying for the paper it is printed on. They are paying for the value that the information represents to them.

Now, with the Internet, you can also sell downloadable information products. You can set up your site so that when someone orders online the product is immediately made available to them for download. Your customers don't have to wait days to receive their products. They can have them now!

The value of downloadable information sales doesn't end here though. By offering the information online, it makes it much easier to update your products and it eliminates potential shipping problems. Shipping is quickly becoming a concern for any small business now that we have a global economy.

One advantage that people rarely talk about in regards to electronic information products directly concerns the subject of this article. You can use a downloadable information product as a freebie on your site to attract thousands of new buyers every month.

You can follow the example that Mirabilis has set for us. You can create an information product and turn it into a downloadable software program using many of the low cost tools available. Every Internet business needs to come up with fresh ideas to drive more traffic to their site, increase their sales, and multiple their profits.

Too often, we get in a rut in our Internet businesses. We keep doing the same things every day even when they aren't working.

My definition of insanity is someone who does the same thing over and over again and expects to receive a different result. 

Many people believe that there are only so many different ways you can market your products or services, such as: banner advertising, search engines, classifieds, etc. 

How do you expect to come out ahead of the competition if you are going to limit your business to what other people in your market are already doing online?

Every multi-million dollar Internet business has one thing in common. They all came up with a new and fresh idea for creating an e-commerce site that stands out in their industry.

For some it was becoming the World's Largest Bookstore like Amazon.com. Others choose to spend their time organizing and indexing web sites like Yahoo.com. Another company named Ebay created the largest auction house in the world. 

Each leading web site had one thing in common. They came up with a fresh idea for helping Internet users find what they are looking for. They found out what frustrations people had and came up with solutions for them.

Yahoo was originally started by two young college guys who wanted to make the Internet easier to use by indexing and categorizing the sites they found. This idea eventually evolved into the portals that we see everywhere today: Infoseek, Alta Vista, Hotbot, Goto, etc. Guess which one still gets the most traffic? The first is the still the best.

Step One: Pay Attention.

You need to start paying attention to what is happening around you. Every story you see on the news is a potential idea for a web site. If the public is interested in a subject, it shows you have a market.

One thing that I have found common in successful direct marketers is that they all pay particular attention to the news. You will find that the ones who are successful are the ones who have spotted the prevailing trends inside of a market. 

I used ISyndicate to deliver daily news from Time News Daily, The Web Guide, Web Development, News: E-Commerce, Wired News: Business, and CNET: Computers. A little further down you will find the hottest CNET Downloads. The hottest message boards and discussion groups online are also linked daily from this page. 

Start spending time watching the world around you. What trends do people keep talking about? What types of frustrations are people experiencing? What is the hotnews of the month?

If you go to the bottom of my News page, you can track and see what message boards and discussions groups are hot. Jump into some of the discussions and read what people are talking about. What are they frustrated with online? Where are the potential opportunities?

The most successful entrepreneurs aren't always the brightest, the most educated, or the most likely candidates, but they are people who learn how to spot opportunities.

Learn how to ask questions of your visitors. Take polls. Put a form on your site for people to leave their comments. Find out what your targeted market is looking for. Then, give it to them.

Step Two: Learn How to Relax.

Something that most people have yet to realize when it comes to developing fresh ideas is that they usually don't come while you are actively working. They come later on while you are playing golf, doing your hobbies, or in the shower.

Too often your mind is plain too stressed out and worn out to come up with solutions while you are at your desk or on your computer. If you want to develop fresh new marketing ideas, you are going to have to learn how to relax. 

The most successful marketers are usually those who have learned the right balance of work and relaxation in their lives. They actively work on their business and then while they are away from their business they let ideas come while they are doing the things they love.

You should always keep a notebook handy for this very reason. After you have thought about and studied what types of Trends and frustrations people are experiencing online, you never know when that winning idea may come to you. It could come when you wake up in the morning, on the golf course, or wherever you go to relax.

If you actively prepare yourself and allow yourself to relax, you are giving your mind what it just may need to come up with that next fresh idea to take your business to the next level of profits.

The Top 5 SUICIDE Missions in Marketing, and How To Avoid Them

"THIS IS *NOT* A SCAM!"
How many times have we seen ads that begin like this, that we just skip right over? Or delete?

I'd have to say a countless many. I felt compelled to write this article yesterday as I was going through ads that people placed in MY own ezine. Even with my high-visibility, "no hype," ad placement, they're STILL lost if they write a terrible ad.

So, my duty today is to warn YOU of the many disgraceful faux pas that can make ANY and EVERY advertising campaign a flop. Each of the following five ad-writing techniques are SUICIDE missions to your marketing success. Let the user beware!

SUICIDE MISSION#1: Use phrases like "This is NOT a scam!"

First of all, if it's not a scam, you shouldn't need to waste valuable advertising space to tell me that. Talk more about your product and what it IS -- not what you claim it ISN'T. In addition to lessening the credibility of your ad, you're also telling us that you're not confident enough about what you offer to leave that judgement up to us!
SUICIDE MISSION#2: Use phrases like "HEY you! FREE SEX!!"
Now, just why would you think I'd want to buy something from (or work with) someone that uses street corner "Cat Calls" to get my attention? This seems to be a popular technique designed to make readers notice an ad due to the shock factor in seeing the word "SEX" in huge letters - but it's most commonly (and disgracefully) used to advertise BUSINESS opportunities!

Again, spend your time telling me about your product, not yelling offensive obscenities at me. And, if sex is irrelevant to your offer, why run the very likely risk of tar getting the WRONG audience??

SUICIDE MISSION #3: USE ALL CAPS IN YOUR ENTIRE AD.
Not only is this unnecessary, it's also considered to be rude on the Internet. All caps means that you're "yelling" at your readers, unless it's used selectively to stress certain points. It also makes your text VERY hard to read.
SUICIDE MISSION #4: Write a down-right BORING advertisement, like...
"If you ever wanted to make money on the Internet, you can do it now, with XYZ Company. My sponsor makes money like this every day. You can be like us and sell what we sell. http://Im-a-Loser.com"

Not only was that ad BORING, it told me nothing but the fact that you make money, your sponsor makes money, and you sell some mysterious product that you think I'll make money from. If your ad doesn't get your prospect EXCITED about what you offer, it's *not* doing its job! Which leads me to number five...

SUICIDE MISSION #5: Spend a lot more time telling me how your product works than how it can improve my life!
I don't care that SpeedyCleen Vacuum Cleaners have a 75ft long hose. I want to know how SpeedyCleen guarantees that a 4ft 10inch woman will finally be able to reach those cobwebs in the formerly impossible-to-reach crevices in her vaulted ceiling!

We don't care that ZippyLemon Laundry Detergent has a garden-fresh lemon scent. We want to know that ZippyLemon will blast out the three-year-old mustard stain on my husband's favorite shirt... with only ONE washing!

To make a long story short, spend more time telling you readers HOW your product can make THEIR lives easier, not how the gadgets on it work!

So, now that you know what NOT to do, let's talk about how to write an ad that virtually FORCES your reader to respond! Remember these five important tactics that'll turn ANY suicide marketing mission into a bonafide success!

BONAFIDE SUCCESS TACTIC #1

Don't use credibility-crushing phrases like "This is NOT a scam!" If it's not, then you shouldn't need to tell us. And, why would we take a stranger at his word, anyway?
BONAFIDE SUCCESS TACTIC #2
Don't use the shock value of SEX-related words to get your reader's attention. Focus on tar getting the RIGHT audience for your purpose!
BONAFIDE SUCCESS TACTIC #3
Only use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS when stressing important points in your ad. Remember -- an ad in all caps is both rude AND hard to read!
BONAFIDE SUCCESS TACTIC #4
Use "excitement" words and symbols to have your readers salivating for more. Replace a few periods (.....) with exclamation points (!!!!!).
INSTEAD OF THIS:
"Subscribe to ABC Ezine for the best freeware, tutorials, and references on the web, for those with no advertising budget. Delivered to your inbox weekly."
TRY THIS:
"ARE YOU BROKE? Let ABC ezine find YOU the best FREE business software and "How-To" tactics - EACH WEEK!
BONAFIDE SUCCESS TACTIC #5
Talk about how your product will enhance various aspects of my life make work easier, make me money, make me beautiful, etc. Don't waste time on telling me how your gadgets work and why they work that way.
Make your *target audience* understand EXACTLY how your product or service will benefit them, and your ads will go a long way!

Top 10 Ways to Doom Your Sponsor-Downline Relationship

Are you in Network Marketing? Want to learn a few ways to totally destroy your sponsor-downline relationship? Use a few of these, and kill your rep in no time:
 

10. When your new downline member signs up, send them a short welcome letter -- and never contact them again.

When your downline is new to the business, it's safe to assume that they know everything about the company, the procedure, and about marketing in general. So, just email them to say "Hi," and good luck figuring everything out!
 

9. Ask your sponsor irrelevant, time-consuming, or unambiguous questions, especially when they've answered those same questions twice before.

Your sponsor has nothing better to do than to answer questions like "So, what does it mean when they say 'cut and paste here?'" Who is "they?" Where did you see that? "Cut" what and "paste" what where??
 

8. Email your downline at least twice a day to "check their progress."

Ask annoying and overbearing questions like "Have you started your advertising like I asked you to?" "Haven't you made any money yet??" Tell them that they just need to try a lot harder.
 

7. If your sponsor sends you valuable info to get you started in the business -- don't read it.

Think to yourself, "I'm experienced in this type of business. I don't need to read these 'beginner's FAQ.' " Then, no later than the next day, be sure to ask your sponsor at least three "quick questions" that were answered in your FAQ. That you didn't read.
 

6. When your new downline comes to you excited that they've made their first sale, act disinterested.

Say something snappy, like, "Great! About fifteen more of those and we'll be in business!!" Then think to yourself, "What kind of commission is that? That's not going to pay MY bills!"
 

5. When you email your sponsor, make sure to use non-descriptive subject lines like "Question," "Oops!" or "From Me@aol.com"

Or, better yet, always leave the subject line completely blank, or say things like, "Hi!" You want to make absolutely certain that your sponsor trashes your mail, thinking it's spam from porn sites.
 

4. When your downline sends you a question, tell yourself, "I can't BELIEVE they didn't know this!"

Then, put it aside to answer later. But, make sure "later" is at least two weeks from the day that they sent it. People are really fond of feeling confused and ignored. And, to top it all off, spell their name wrong when you finally do respond. Add a few extra letters. Folks LOVE that.
 

3. Send your sponsor at least six questions, and check back at least once every three hours because you "hadn't heard from them."

Fail to realize that your sponsor may have at least 50 other needy people in their downline that need answers. Fail to realize that your sponsor may not know the answers, and may need to research your questions, or look them up. Then, when you do get an answer, immediately send them six MORE questions -- with a few of the old ones thrown in for good measure.
 

2. Ask your sponsor a question. The same question. At least once a day.

Make sure it's always the same question. Then, when they answer it, no matter how many times and how many ways they answer it, don't believe them. Then, hunt down their sponsor, and ask them the same thing. And finally, when you get the very same answer, decide that you can "put your curious mind at ease."
 

And, the number one thing that you can do to doom your sponsor-downline relationship:
 

1. Address your female sponsor or downline member as "Dear Sir."

UpSide Down Marketing

The normal business process is to have a product, start looking for prospects, and make the sale. Guess What? Normal businesses also don't work very well!

Let's turn business upside down!

If you would really love to have a radical change in your business, you are going to have to make some radical changes in your methods.

One definition of insanity that I feel is especially appropriate for business owners to understand is, "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting to receive different results."

If you continue to run your business in a "normal" way, you will always be limited to "normal" results.

If you want to have "exceptional" results in your business, you are going to have to put "exceptional" methods to work for you.

If you are like 99% of internet marketers I know, I will venture to bet that you have a web site & product and that your biggest problem is building the traffic to your site. I will also bet you aren't making very many sales!

What happens if we turn this process upside down?

What happens if we choose to find the prospects first...build a relationship with them...and then find a product that they Dream about?

Everybody online appears to have a product. How many of them have an audience?

It is kind of funny...I always have people emailing me that they have an awesome product they want to sell to the world. They just can't get anyone to visit their site.

I rarely ever have anyone saying, "I have too much traffic and I just don't know what to sell." When they do email. I can guarantee you that those people are the easiest people in the world to help.

If you have the traffic, all you have to do is ask them what they want. Then, find it for them.

If you have a product, we have to figure out a way to get traffic to your site, set up the sales process, and start making sales.

I am not saying this isn't possible. We do it all the time. What I am saying is that it is the wrong way to do business on the net.

Let's turn it upside down.

Instead of starting out with a product, let's start out by figuring out what it is that you are passionate about. What is it that is exciting in your life and that you have experience and skills in?

What is it that gets your fire burning? Way too many people have decided to just follow the pack instead of being creative and coming up with their own ideas.

Since the rest of the pack seems to be slowly moving away into oblivion (Over 95% of internet sites are losing money), shouldn't you make a change of direction?

Once we figure out what it is that you love, let's decide where you can find other people just like you.

Use the internet networking tools at your disposal...

Go to http://www.forumone.com to do keyword searches of forums you can visit on this activity.

Go to http://www.dejanews.com to do the same for newsgroups.

Visit http://www.liszt.com to find all the mailing lists which deal with this topic.

Start visiting and subscribing to everything that has to do with your topic. Start participating in the discussions which go on at these sites.

Find out what people are talking about the most in your subject. Which element is the most popular? What is it that everyone is looking for online? If you don't find out by visiting these groups, start asking some questions.

Spend some time at these sites...Start visiting web sites which come up in the discussions. Make a list of things which each web site has - and what it doesn't have.

Once you know what it is people are looking for (from your participating in the discussion groups) and have found out what it is that is lacking in most of the sites...You now know how to get started. You can start building your business on Your USP (Unique Selling Position).

Design a web site, or even better, hire a professional to do it for you. Make sure that every part of it though deals with your chosen theme.

Note: I am very wary of giving specific examples in this article, because every time I do I get dozens of people emailing me that they are going to do exactly what I wrote about. Instead of following the theme of my article though, they all just want to set up the business I gave an example of.

In this article, we are discussing the strategy itself, not any specific business or industry. If you take time to start following what I am telling you here, every part of it will become clearer as each step is taken.

Start having automated traffic tools such as free information, your own discussion group or a specialized postcard site that deals with your theme.

Build up a community atmosphere and then invite visitors from all the groups you have been participating in on a daily basis. Instead of trying to sell them something, just invite them for the solutions which you have for free at your site.

Get the discussion group going on your site by picking a "Hot" element of discussion that you keep seeing come up on the other boards. Have a specialized discussion group instead of just a general one if you want to achieve high traffic from it.

Start up an Opt-In list where you will send out updates and free information on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

At this point in time, you want to focus on building up a close relationship with your visitors. You have not even chosen a product to have on your site yet. You are just building relationships and loyal visitors.

After you have started building up this group, you can actually ask them what it is that they want. Then, find it for them.

Either have it developed yourself or find someone who has it already. Then, do a Joint Venture with the product owner and endorse the product to your list and your visitors.

Let them know how you sought out and found the best _______ on the market for them and how you negotiated the best deal possible (10% off, A Free Bonus, etc.).

Note: This has to be real. You really do have to do your homework and find them the best _________. You really do have to negotiate and try to get the best deal possible for them. Don't let an ounce of deception come into play in any part of the process.

Watch your responses and sales skyrocket. What might have been a 1% sales response for the original company now becomes a 10% response from your entire list of friends.

Once you have the traffic and the list, It isn't hard at allto find the products. They will constantly be knocking at your door.

Would you rather be the person sitting back with his choice of people to work with or do you want to continue to be someone with a product looking for a customer.

The average web site may not operate this way, but do you want the results of the average web site?

Turn it upside down!

Well, in this movie, actor Michael Keaton plays an individual who ends up over his head with too much work to do. He ends up getting offered a chance to eliminate some of the work by being "cloned."

Well, he ends up being cloned and his clone goes to work for him at his job. Then, he clones himself again for this one to take care of the work at home. Then, one of the clones has themselves cloned. Well, you get the idea.

Well, because of confusion and other problems, having a few clones around didn't work very good for Michael Keaton in the movie.

BUT...Cloning will work for You.

Of course, I am not talking about literal human clones. Besides the moral and religious problems this type of action would bring up, I really wouldn't want to deal with another one of me around here...with those bad attitudes and all.

The kind of cloning I am talking about is how you can clone your online business efforts. Working on top rankings for the search engines, posting classified ads, writing your own newsletter, and coming up with content for your web site is a LOT of work.

You can wear yourself out trying to do everything experts claim you "need" to do in marketing online. You have to find a better way.

Here come the clones...

Although I still do many of the methods above...and dozens of other techniques, I don't rely on them. As a matter of fact, there are times I don't do any type of advertising whatsoever...not even post a single message on a discussion group.

I may be busy helping a client, taking a vacation, or working on a new web site. Whatever the reason, there are times I just don't advertise.

Guess what? Most of my traffic just continues right along. The opt-in list keeps growing. The orders keep coming in.

The reason is that I have "clones" doing the work for me.

Let me tell you the names of a few of them.

1. Free Content

I give full permission for anyone to use any free article I write in their ezines, on their sites, or even in their magazines.

Every article has a little resource box for me at the bottom and brings more traffic...and sales into my site.

It is a Win-Win situation. The person using the article gets to have content for their newsletter or for their web site to give themselves a greater credibility. I get to receive extra traffic without spending any time or money.

2. Free Electronic Books

My first electronic book, "101 High Profit Businesses You Can Start Online With Little Or NO Money," was created and given to my subscribers as a Christmas present last year. Little did I know the chain reaction which would start.

Immediately people started requesting permission to post this book at their sites. Of course, I said yes. Soon, there were near a thousand sites which had it listed.

A referral script is a pretty easy script to install on a site, but many people don't want to mess with that kind of stuff. So, I have set it up so other webmasters can use my referral script to refer friends to their sites.

The Webmasters get referrals without having to mess with CGI scripts, and I get a little link on the bottom of the emails. It is another Win-Win situation.

6. Free Income

Affiliate programs can put your web site profits into overdrive. You are only one person, but when thousands of people start promoting your site, sales can really start to happen.
