tile comes close to hitting the mark...most public and academic libraries
should have a least a few good men's grooming guides like this on...."

What to wear... why (a reader
from Boston )
Have to jump in here. I loved this
book, precisely because it doesn't just tell men what to wear. Style isn't
about being told exactly what to wear. Style is understanding what clothes
say about a man and how to look good! Any book that tells you exactly what
to wear is going to be stale in one year. This is the book that lays out
the whys!
All women should buy this book
for their men this Christmas (A reader from
New York City)
What a great find! From the easy-to-follow
illustrations to the fast and easy "30 second quality tests," this book
has been a Godsend for my formerly fashion-impaired boyfriend. Who says
style can't be taught?

Its indispensable for me (A reader
from
Boston Massachusettes)
What a great gift item for almost
everybody - men including sons, dads, grandfathers, or business associates
and don’t forget women such as wives, girlfriends, and daughters who end
up dressing their significant others! The Indispensable Guide to Classic
Men’s Clothing is an invaluable reference book for me or anyone who wishes
to be knowledgeable about timeless classic men’s wear. I had a great time
reading it from cover to cover in one sitting and I couldn’t put it down
- it’s written in such an easy and unassuming style. It is both a history
book on men’s clothing and a practical book for today when you really want
to wear appropriate clothes for an occasion. The book speaks both to those
living within a tight budget (me) - I can now identify quality on my own
in retail stores or thrift shops - and to those for which money is not
an issue. It may sound stodgy that the book gives you knowledge amounting
to hundreds of years of combined history from the most prestigious of clothiers,
but I feel that it definitely adds to my appreciation of what people are
wearing today and what I would like to wear - even if it’s not classic.
I guess it’s analogous to learning psychology in college: with that knowledge,
one can more easily define oneself and other people. With information from
this book, you now can identify your own and other people’s styles more
clearly - and its fun. I feel like I’ve had easy-going conversations with
the most knowledgeable of conservative clothing retailers and I can walk
into any store with more confidence. A must read!

The Tie should be reissued (A
reader from New York)
I found a copy of The Tie: trends
& traditions in a second-hand bookshop and read it in one sitting.
It contains about 50,000 words and every one of them is gripping. It's
Longditude for neckwear. Why on earth isn't it reissued? It is a classic.
Brilliant analysis of neckwear
(A reader from London)
This costume history book is unlikely
to be equalled. Sarah Gibbings has done an outstanding job of recording
the history of a small but often vital part of a man's attire.

Botsford's Daddy's Ties : A Project & Keepsake Book
Shirley Botsford / Paperback / Published
1994
Amazon.com The necktie
is perhaps one of the most varied sources of interesting and unusual fabrics.
Though some are notoriously ugly, many are good-looking, even stunning.
They can often be had for very little money at thrift shops and yard sales--or
for free right out of the back of the closet when their owner is tired
of them. Noted crafter Shirley Botsford has transformed these variegated
strips of silk, wool, cotton, and even polyester into a variety of items.
The more than 30 projects include quilts, scarves, purses, vests, lampshades,
pillows, covered boxes, Christmas stockings, and stuffed animals. From
finding old ties and taking them apart to the step-by-steps of transforming
them into all sorts of colorful objects,Daddy's Ties is full of
charming ideas.

1, 1994 The ultimate recycling craft that, if done well,
actually doesn't look like a recycling effort. Designer Botsford, inspired
by the memory of her late father's ties, shows a passel of ways to use
neck gear, from simple scarves to a complicated three-piece woman's suit.
Her more than 30 designs include pouf purse, head gear, a teddy bear, Christmas
ornaments, lamp shades, and, of course, the ubiquitous pillows and quilts.
Instructions are clear (though somewhat telescoped in terms of space);

Daddy's Ties (Suzanna MW)
This is one of the most creative
books I've bought in a long time--and I buy a LOT of craft/sewing books.
I inherited a huge pile of my father's ties and knew I wanted to make something
with them, but didn't really know how to begin. Shirley Botsford gives
great advice about the "pre-project" phase of preparing the ties in order
to incorporate them into textile rebirth. There are lots of specific ideas,
but I found her ideas sparking new ones of my own.
